The Score Card and Scoring

The Green Workplace Challenge scorecard is intended to be used to assess your organization’s environmental practices as well as a resource for gathering new ideas. Once registered, participating organizations may access and update their scorecards at any time, with the goal of increasing their scores throughout the challenge year. Scores will be reviewed periodically, and participants will receive awards throughout the year as they reach higher levels of recognition.

The Green Workplace Scorecard has questions which are specific ideas for greening a workplace, including questions that are left open for innovative practices. The scorecard is divided into four categories:

  • Employee Involvement & Community Outreach
  • Energy & Water
  • Waste & Consumption
  • Transportation

The maximum score for the Green Challenge is 182 points. All scorecards include a bonus point for referring another organization to participate in the challenge. Although participants are encouraged to achieve as many points as possible, they are not expected to achieve all points. As noted below, an organization that receives 15 points has taken many important steps toward being an environmentally conscious workplace and is deserving of recognition.

The Green Workplace Challenge has four award levels for Local Environmental Hero, which are tied to the following point totals:

15-35 PTS
BRONZE
36-69 PTS
SILVER
70-99 PTS
GOLD
100 & ABOVE PTS
PLATINUM

Judging

Once your scorecard has been submitted, you will have the opportunity to update regularly throughout the challenge. Please update your scorecard(s) with your most recent improvements. Participants will be notified when the next award ceremony is scheduled.

Will my answers be verified?

This is a friendly challenge to motivate better environmental practices. For the most part, we are relying on the honor system. However we do reserve the right to contact organizations and ask them to verify any answers, especially when awards are concerned.

Can my organization add multiple users to the same scorecard?

We understand that your organization may have multiple individuals who would be responsible for individual parts of the scorecard. The Asheville Workplace Challenge allows your organization to assign multiple users to the same organization. Your team is able to work together to seamlessly complete your organizations scorecard through this functionality.

  • Click User Manager on the top of this website.
  • To add a new user, press the link ‘Click here to create a new user’.
  • Please answer the short questionnaire (user name, password, name, etc.).
  • Click ‘Create New User’ to add the new user to your organization’s profile.
Who in my organization should complete this scorecard?

We recommend a primary point of contact/administrator register your organization as a new participant, and then the following employee positions can be added as additional users to help fill out each scorecard. These additional users may be identified during the registration process.

If you are smaller businesses with shared job responsibilities, one individual may complete all scorecards. For larger businesses, we recommend that a staff member in Operations, Facilities Management, Environmental Affairs, or similar department be responsible for completing the Green Scorecard.

How often can I update my scorecard(s)?

You can update your scorecard as often as you would like. Please note the judging deadlines to ensure your scorecard(s) is updated to meet those milestones. The judging deadline is end of April, 2018.

What if I do not sign-up when the Challenge is launched, and therefore would have less than a year to improve my score(s)?

You can begin the Workplace Challenge anytime within the challenge period; however, the end of the challenge (April, 2018) will remain the same for all participants regardless of when you begin.

What if my business has multiple locations?

You have the option to complete the survey for your entire organization, or you can choose to complete the survey for one particular location (For example: your business is a franchise). If you choose to complete the scorecard(s) for the entire organization, please ensure that answers apply to ALL of your workplace facilities. If you choose to complete the survey for one of your locations, please indicate in parenthesis which location you are focusing on next to the name of your workplace. This information can be edited through "My Info" on your Dashboard.

Does this Challenge apply to my workplace and the products or services we provide?

Though many of our local businesses provide innovative and sustainable products and services in Asheville, this challenge only measures the information about the workplace.

Tracking your progress

Once you set up an account, you will also have a link to track your progress from the dashboard. A graph will display your current score on each scorecard. Each time you log-in or access the dashboard, you can monitor your progress by the date of your entry and monitor your progress as it relates to the recognition levels of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Saving your Scorecard(s)

Please be sure to save frequently. Your login will timeout after 30 minutes of inactivity. Click the submit button at the bottom of each scorecard to save your progress at any point, and as frequently as needed.

Are my answers shared publicly?

Organizations can decide whether they want their scores to be publicly visible. If shared publicly, only the final score will be visible, not answers to individual questions.

How can my workplace get a free no-idling sign to display?

Your workplace can earn points by hanging a no-idling sign to deter cars from idling while parked. If you are interested in acquiring one of these signs, please email the Challenge at BHerring@ashevillenc.gov, and we can get you one for free!

If you need assistance, clarification on a question, or would like to learn more about how to improve your score on any scorecard, please email BHerring@ashevillenc.gov.
